Hong Kong Stuff

I was at a bar on Thursday night for my friend's birthday. We're both from the US and we both have girlfriends so we didn't really do much except for joke around and drink. I consider myself pretty observant, and I can't help but notice that half the girls coming into the bars have a predetermined purpose. I turned 21 in Dec but haven't frequented bars that much; maybe it's like this in all the big cities. But I am thinking it is particularly bad in Hong Kong.

What I am talking about is people who go to bars specifically to find someone who can provide them with material goods in exchange for...you know. I am pretty liberal when it comes to a lot of things, but sex is not one of them. While I am not religious, I still find life to be a beautiful thing, and every aspect of it should be respected and valued. Sex is undeniably a part of life, so it is not surprising that I prefer to place it higher than other "hobbies"...say... basketball or music.

Unfortunately that is what I see too much of in Central, HK. To so many men here, girls are just on the checklist for the night. As an Asian American I have grown to notice disparities in the way different races are treated around the world. In my mind, it is even worse that there are foreigners coming to Hong Kong, not interested in the local culture, but rather use their "foreigners are probably wealthier" status to exploit local women. And the women, at the same time, find no problem in doing so.

I am not against interracial relationships at all. In fact, I often think they are a good thing: when it is real and the relationships are commonplace, then it shows that the racial barriers in the area have been reduced. But this is not the case in Asia, or in the rest of the world. There is a severe case of the "white men are better" attitude everywhere you look. And the reason for this belief, at least in Asia, tends to be nothing more than "it is likelier that they have money". That is the problem.

I hope I make it clear that I am not a racist; I have friends of different ethnicity, but this imbalance really bothers me, and I am determined that I should do something to make a change, even a minor one, around the world. But I am not sure how to go about doing it yet. Maybe all people my age have dreams like this; I am hoping the "real world" will not change my principles too much.

Not really a blog; more like a collection of random thoughts going through my head in my last 10 days in Hong Kong before finishing up college in California.

Wow this was a long time ago. Thanks for replying though. I'm not as unhappy about it now, but I've shifted focus to Asian American issues instead. Feel free to read my blog at doorhalfopen.wordpress.com.

I don't doubt that certain behavior by certain groups of HK males are driving girls away. Usually it's just generalizations though. My cousin works for a radio station in Hong Kong and said that there was a program in which young HK men and women were surveyed about the opposite gender. Most of them were overwhelmingly negative. HK guys don't have manners. They're too skinny. HK girls are slutty and loud. S on and so forth. In reality, is it really that bad? Very weird how these attitudes develop, but HK seems to put itself down in many other ways as well. I can't explain it.

As for the 'easy to get as well as easy to dump', that seems like a sweeping generalization of Asian girls, not just in Hong Kong. It's sad, but judging by how some people act in Central and other places like Thailand, it's not hard to see why these ideas came about.

Hi Lawrence, I guess those girls who prefer 'white guy' is not only because they r wealthier, sometimes it's just HK guys r making people disappointed. And girls maybe most likely to find foreigner in Central, so u met loads of them there.

But I do find another problem, this situation makes foreigners think that HK girl (Asian girl) are easy to get as well as easy to dump. Which is what I hate about.

Maybe a better title would have been "My first blog is a collection of random thoughts" hahahah Cause you're not that unhappy in your writing. Or did I miss something?
